Eric Strand is Associate Professor of English. He received his MA in English from University of California, Irvine, MA in Sociology from State University of New York at Stony Brook and PhD in English from University of California, Irvine.
Before joining the Foreign Studies College at Hunan Normal University, he was Assistant Professor of English in Lingnan University, courses including Black Lives That Matter in Contemporary Literature, Rebellion and Reaction: The 1960s Counterculture in Literature and Film, Introduction to Poetry and Drama etc. and had taught for several years at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. In the spring of 2016, he worked as Visiting Assistant Professor of English in New York Institute of Technology (Nanjing campus).
His research interests are 20th-century American literature, American Studies. He has published on topics ranging from Lord Byron’s poetry to the post-independence Indian English novel in Studies in Romanticism, Twentieth-Century Literature, and ELH (https://ln.academia.edu/EricStrand). His book manuscripts, “White Flight: Travel Narratives, Globalization, and the American Middle Class,” contains chapters on William S. Burroughs, Saul Bellow, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Wright, and Carlos Bulosan, and “The Black New Deal: African Americans Rewrite the Welfare State” discusses the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, Margaret Walker, Richard Wright, Malcolm X, Alice Walker, and Ta-Nehisi Coates.
